One thing that the Marine Corps instills in their troops is their leadership traits. That's nonsense in fact, the opposite is true. "The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born - that there is a genetic factor to leadership. Nevertheless, Marines are known for their leadership and discipline, and biases aside, there is much to learn from them. Am I being biased because I serve in this prestigious institution? Probably. But today, I will focus on how the private sector can learn from the branches of the military, and one specifically: The United States Marine Corps. There are a lot of lessons that the corporate world can learn from the military, and vice versa. Competency models are an important guide for your leadership development program, but we need to take it one step further and help our employees understand the leadership skills that the organization needs from them. These are all valid answers, but to cultivate exceptional leaders we must start from understanding what the needs of the organizations are and what skills we are looking to develop. Others will give you the classic: decision-making, communication, and feedback. When I am asked how I can help develop leaders in organizations, my question is always, "What are the skills or traits that your organization wants from its leaders?" The answer goes back to the competency model, if one exists.
